Unfortunately, it appears they are facing an apocalyptic event as the city is engulfed in what Ray Stantz (played by Dan Aykroyd) describes as “deadly cold.” Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire follows Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which saw the original team effectively passing the torch to a new generation of Ghostbusters. Now, it seems they’re facing their biggest challenge: summer in New York.
“In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all began: New York’s iconic firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who have developed a top-secret research lab to take ghosts to the next level. “, reads the official synopsis. “But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second ice Age.”
Paul Rudd is back as Gary Grooberson, this time with his own suit and presumably a proton pack alongside Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace and Carrie Coon. Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson will also return as two of the original Ghostbusters, and although they aren’t listed in the cast, there was also a glimpse of Bill Murray.
The upcoming sequel was teased in 2022 by writer Jason Reitman, who teased the Ghostbusters’ return to the iconic New York City firehouse. “The last time we saw Ecto-1, he was returning to Manhattan: the home of Ghostbusters,” he revealed. via Twitter. “This is where our story begins. The code name is FIREHOUSE. Gil Kenan directed the film based on a screenplay she co-wrote with Reitman.
IGN’s review of Ghostbusters: Afterlife gave it 9/10 and said: “Director Jason Reitman makes his father and fans proud with a funny, sweet, and scary family film that proudly takes on the legacy of Ghostbusters, all by introducing something exciting and new. It helps that Mckenna Grace is the kind of once-in-a-generation talent: charming, genuine, and the beating heart of this already heartfelt film. Get ready to fall in love with the Ghostbusters all over again.”
